If left neglected, leaking pipes can do a lot of damage to your property. While you wait for a plumber, you can employ a variety of temporary repairs for leaking pipes, such as epoxy putty or pipe clamps. You can use a slip coupling to make the operation easier if you wish to fix the pipe yourself to bring it up to code. Turn off your water supply, regardless of what you're using, so your pipes don't leak while you're working!
1 Turn off your home's water supply.
Determine where your main water supply is located, which is usually in your basement or crawl space. Turn the dial clockwise to turn off the water supply to your home, stopping the leak and preventing further damage.
In an emergency, contact your water company to determine if the water supply to your home can be switched off.
2 On the pipe, dry the leaking area.
After all of the water has been drained from the pipes, wipe the area around the leak totally dry using a cleaning cloth. As a result, it won't be slippery when you're working on it .[4]
If any stray drips of water fall out of the leak, place a cloth or pail underneath it.
The method you choose to repair your pipe is determined by the location. It could be a pinhole in the pipe or a loose fitting where it links to another pipe, for example.
3 Use an Epoxy Putty to Make a Temporary Repair
Epoxy putty heats up as you work with it, which might cause pain if you deal with it on bare skin. Make sure the gloves are thin enough to allow you to work intricately while wearing them. Wear gloves whenever you work with the epoxy putty.
Latex or nitrile gloves are available at any hardware or big box shop.
